I thought that vegetarian options would be easy to come by in Japan, but when I ordered my first tofu dish and it came out drowning under a meat laced sauce I knew it wasn’t going to be so simple.

Japanese cuisine is almost entirely based around fish or meat plus carbs.  You will always have some type of vegetable, but usually just as a small side dish or garnish.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining one bit about Japanese food (it – is – *so* good) but there aren’t as many options as you’d think.

The good news?  There ARE options!

1. Organic+ (オーガニックプラス)

This is a great option right in the heart of downtown Sapporo, super close to Norbesa (the big Ferris wheel) in fact!  Using Organic ingredients to make beautiful dishes, the food is simple but wonderfully tasty.  A stylish space with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

Recommended dish: Vegan gf curry

2. Aoi Sora

A petite restaurant/cafe located near Maruyama park run by the loveliest (and cutest) owner ever.  They sell set meals made from the local seasonal produce that’s available during the time of your visit – so it really is a vege Hokkaido experience!  Aoi Sora is usually only open until 5pm, however if you are a group you can book in for dinner.

3. Terra Farm to Table

This is one of the more well known locations for vegetarians and vegans alike.  Located near Nakashima Park, this fashionable restaurant is the perfect stop after your morning stroll.

4. Raw Food Lohas

5. Itadakizen

Belonging to the chain located throughout Japan (and now over in the UK) this one is a goody!  If you’re looking for a tasty vegan sushi then this is where you need to go.  Finish off with a yummy organic cake and your stomach will be singing with happiness!
